A Snowboarding Trick Tip for the ‘Indy Grab’

Learning how to snowboard is easy if you start small. Don’t try to run before you have learnt how to walk. Trying a big trick before you can do easier ones will only end in at best frustration, and at worst injury. Starting small is the first, and best, snowboarding trick tip you will ever hear.

Once you have mastered the basics of skating, sliding, and generally moving on flat ground and inclines then you are ready to learn this snowboarding trick tip. An easy first trick to pull is an ‘Indy Grab’. This may look a little intimidating at first but it’s really not that complicated.

The Indy Grab

It will take a bit of guts to do the Indy Grab for the first time. Do this at a half pipe that has a reasonable height for a beginner. You don’t want to grab a lot of air on your first try. You just want a little height so you can practise your jump.

The first snowboarding trick tip you will learn is the importance of pre loading. This means bending your knees before you jump. Don’t go into the jump super fast, you want a reasonable speed you can handle; at the same time you don’t want to be crawling to the jump.

When you reach the lip, the edge, of the jump you want to straighten up and jump. When you are in the air you should not bend at the waist. Instead pull your knees towards your chest so that your board is within arm’s reach.

You want to grab the board on the toe side, that’s the side on the front side of your body, with your rear hand. Your free arm should be out in the air. Don’t hold onto your board the whole time, or you could end up breaking your knees! Something you really want to avoid.

The next snowboarding trick tip for the Indy Grab is to bend you knees while straightening up. Before you land your legs should not be bent towards you, they should be straightened out, but not all the way. You need a little bend at the knee to absorb the shock of your landing.

To get a better idea of this trick and the technique needed you should look at snowboarding trick videos. The videos will give you an idea of how the trick looks as a whole and the steps that make up the trick. Watching the video a few times along with these snowboarding trick tips will help you perfect the Indy Grab.
